AP Latin

Description: In this class students should expect to master the following: sight reading directly from Latin to English in all the Aeneid passages from this syllabus; writing translations of the Latin in English as literally as possible with particular attention to tense, voice, number, and mood of verbs, subject-verb agreement, and tense and voice of participles; critically evaluating the passages in essay form, taking note of Latin metrics and style and particularly referencing the Latin text; identifying Virgil’s significant word choice and placement, imagery, and figures of speech; reading the entire Aeneid in English to place the Latin lines and the epic’s characters in their greater historical, social, cultural, and political context with special attention to recurring and general themes; scanning dactylic hexameter verse both aloud and when translating. We will also do an ongoing study of vocabulary, syntax, and inflection, as well as testing that is based on the form of the AP exam with particular emphasis on sight reading passages across the syllabus and writing critical essays about both the greater epic and the Latin text. This class will be AP-approved so that students can include it on transcripts. This class is worth 1 high school credit.

Grade Level: 9-12 (ages 14-18)

Prerequisites: Normally a translation class is completed prior to AP Latin but some students opt to take this as a first translation course and have done well in the past.

Required Materials: Vergil’s Aeneid: Selected Readings from Books 1, 2, 4, and 6, by Barbara Weiden Boyd. Caesar: Selections from his Commentarii De Bello Gallico, by Hans-Friedrich Mueller. The Aeneid, by Vergil, translated by David West. Optional: Caesar and Vergil AP Vocabulary Cards, by Dennis De Young and David R. Pellegrino. Students will also need a USB headset microphone (built-in microphones also work).

AP Requirements: Students interested in taking the AP test for this class, please note that you must secure a testing site where you can take the exam. Memoria Academy does not provide AP tests or collaborate with testing centers to schedule the exam for students.
