Eighth Grade Literature

Description: In this class, students are leaving the delightful world of children’s literature and entering the advanced world of English classics. The first selection, Treasure Island, invites students to join in Robert Louis Stevenson’s swashbuckling adventure. Students will then read The Wind in the Willows and Julius Caesar. Your students will also be led into a love of poetry, which is helpful for memorization and for preparing students to read more Shakespeare. Several passages are required for memorization. Students should devote approximately 45 minutes per day for this course. The grade is based on participation, periodic reading quizzes, book tests, and a poetry analysis assignment.

Grade Level: 7-8 (ages 12-14)

Prerequisites: Students should be strong readers, relatively proficient with the basics of English grammar, able to construct grammatically complete sentences, and able to edit any written work with the help of a parent (if needed).

Required Materials: Eighth Grade Literature, Poetry, and Short Stories Set. Teacher guides are optional but recommended. Students will need a headset microphone (built-in microphones will also work).
