High School Composition III
Description: This is the final year of Classical Composition, which is based on the “progymnasmata,” a system of writing instruction that was the primary method of teaching and learning writing for most of the history of Western civilization. Students will review most of the previous stages and then move on to study the Characterization, Description, Thesis & Law Stages. Students will need to devote approximately 45-60 minutes per day for this class. The grade is based on participation and final drafts, which are turned in each week and graded by the instructor. This class is worth 1 high school credit in English, Language Arts, Writing, or Composition.
Grade Level: 11-12 (ages 16-18)
Prerequisites: Completion of Encomium, Invective & Comparison. Students should be proficient with English grammar, be able to write grammatically complete sentences, construct paragraphs, and edit their work.
Required Materials: Characterization, Description, Thesis and Law Student Guides. Also, students will need their Classical Composition Student Guides from all prior levels to use as review. We highly recommend that parents purchase the Teacher Guide for spot-checking. Students will also need a USB headset microphone (built-in microphones also work).
