Material Logic

Description: A practical study of the conceptual elements of rational thinking through the study of how to define, classify, and identify the basic components of language and thought. These elements are crucial to anyone desiring to acquire critical thinking skills. Emphasis is on Aristotle’s distinctions of the ten categories, the five predicables, and the four causes. Students will need to devote 30-45 minutes per day for this class. The grade is based on participation, weekly quizzes, and a final exam. This class is worth 1/2 a high school credit in philosophy or as an elective.

Grade Level: 9-12 (ages 14-18)

Prerequisites: None. Most students have taken Traditional Logic I and II.

Required Materials: Material Logic Student Text, Workbook, and Answer Key, by Martin Cothran. DVD’s are not required. Students will also need a USB headset microphone (built-in microphones also work).
