School Newspaper & Journalism Club

Description: The School Newspaper & Journalism Club gives students hands-on experience in both print and digital media in a fun and safe environment. We’ll meet twice each month for one hour for instruction, assignments, and production work.

Club Objectives:

  • Learn the fundamentals of journalism:
    • Reporting, writing, editing, design, and ethics
  • Produce at least one student newspaper per semester, shared with MA students, parents, and staff
  • Build key skills:
    • Write different types of articles using journalistic structure and style
    • Conduct interviews professionally (with staff or approved individuals)
    • Self- and peer-edit using grammar and writing skills
    • Design layouts and content using Canva
    • Select, edit, and place photos effectively
    • Practice journalistic integrity, accuracy, and fairness

This club is perfect for students interested in writing, creativity, and media production while learning to communicate clearly and ethically.

Because there are no graded assessments, students will not receive a grade or credit for participation in this club. The students will be asked to complete various tasks related to the publication of the school paper, but students will not receive a grade for them. Click here for more information about the Memoria Academy Student Clubs & Forums.

Grade Level: 9-12 (ages 14-18)

Prerequisites: None

Required Materials: Students will need a computer with a built-in microphone and camera and a free subscription to the design platform Canva. Once students have a free version of Canva, the club sponsor is able to add them to the school’s professional Canva account.
