The Essay Intensive
Description: Every genre has its own conventions, and academic essay writing has its own unique set of expectations. In this intensive course, students will learn and practice the conventions of academic writing, including thesis statements and MLA citation style, while getting personalized feedback from a master teacher. High school students will build the writings skills necessary to succeed in college in a personalized environment by writing about short works of literature including a fairy tale, a George Herbert poem, and a Ray Bradbury short story. This course is worth .5 high school credits.
Prerequisites: Good typing skills and access to a word processing program
Grade Level: 9-12 (ages 14-18)
Required Materials: Any recent edition of They Say, I Say by Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein.
Students will need a USB headset (built-in microphones may work).
Please note: These courses are approved as Dual Credit through Colorado Christian University (ENG 102 – English Composition).
