Traditional Logic II

Description: A continuation of how we form ideas, judgments, and arguments, and how we express them, with an emphasis on the structure of reasoning for students wanting to expand their knowledge of formal logic beyond basic argument forms to include advanced, complex arguments. This class will cover the four figures of the traditional syllogism, the three forms of rhetorical arguments (called enthymemes), the three kinds of hypothetical syllogisms, the four kinds of complex syllogisms, as well as relational arguments. The class also includes a wealth of argument examples. Students will need to devote 45 minutes per day for this class. The grade is based on participation, weekly quizzes, and a final exam. Students are required to be actively involved in class. This class is worth 1/2 a high school credit in language arts, philosophy, or as an elective.

Grade Level: 8-12 (ages 13-18)

Prerequisites: Traditional Logic I or equivalent.

Required Materials: Traditional Logic II Student Text, Workbook  Teacher Key (Workbook, Quizzes and Tests) by Martin Cothran. Students will also need a USB headset (built-in microphones also work).
